KARATE-DO

The word Karate, pronounced Ka-ra-te, is a form of fighting born out of a need to defend and protect oneself. Karate is a combination of two Japanese characters: kara, meaning empty, and te, meaning hand; thus karate means “empty hand.” Like most martial arts, Karate has been defined as a weapon-less means of defence with a goal to teach you how to fight. Adding the suffix “-do”, meaning “way,” i.e., karate-do, implies karate as a total way of life that goes well beyond the self-defense applications taught in most martial arts schools. The physical methods of karate teach a student how to become a more efficient and effective fighter, allowing them to better defend themselves. It develops and conditions the whole body by turning every part of it into a weapon.

It combines offensive and defensive techniques (a variety of blocks, strikes, evasions, throws, and joint manipulations) that use all parts of the body to their maximum advantage. Fundamentally it teaches the body to react in a specific manner, under pressure, in certain situations. Conversely, as Gichin Funakoshi so eloquently states, the true nature of karate lies not in the physical confrontation but in the pursuit of character development; perfection of action through pure and truthful thought. Karate in the hands of people, without these ideals, becomes nothing more than a effective tool to hurt people with. The aim of training then is to not only polish the skill of karate but to polish our spirit, and attitude; To shed the ego and strive towards the goal of character perfection.

BUDO

Budo is the Martial Way or Path. It is a lifelong pursuit of spiritual self improvement that, amongst many things, allows us to be more aware and in control of self to effectively help others.

Time is the greatest gift you can give your child so we love that parents stay to watch their children thrive, grow and share their Budo Journey. They clearly love it too.

We are committed to providing a safe, supportive and nurturing environment for participation. Every child develops differently, sometimes they have tough and tiring days just like us and some take a little more time to adjust. Be assured your child is making progress. Help create a positive atmosphere. Trust the guidance your child is receiving. This will support their love of karate, their Budo journey and their desire to attend.

OSU!

The OSU in Kyokushin comes from the expression “Oshi shinobu!”, which means to push oneself to the limit of one’s ability and to continue to persevere under pressure, and to endure. It is used as a word of many meanings, expressing the willingness to strive against all odds, to persevere on the road to physical, mental, and spiritual strength, an expression of respect of one’s seniors and responsibility to ones juniors. OSU is pronounced strong and loud “OSS!, with a long “O”.

WHAT IS THE DOJO KUN?

The Dojo Kun is a verbal affirmation that is recited with pride by all of the students, usually at the end of each training session. It is customary for total silence in the dojo from spectators during the Dojo Kun.

The purpose of the Dojo Kun is to remind all of the students in the dojo, regardless of their rank, that the physical, mental, and spiritual growth that they enjoy as a by product of their karate training, must also extend beyond the dojo’s walls. Therefore, each student must take the underlying principals of this art form and make them a regular part of their daily life.
