I teach Traditional Japanese Karate

and I believe the Dojo is the

best place to learn skills

and build self confidence.

My whole life is Karate.

This is full time for me

and I put my heart

into teaching life skills

to all my students.

Thankyou for trusting me to teach

and I truly want all my students

to love coming to class.

SENSEI CARL SULLIVAN

Osu and welcome, here’s a little bit about me.

As I reviewed our website I realised much of what was written about me and for me was more for those with Martial Arts experience. So here I will write from the heart because I teach from the heart.

I am first a father of 3, Keagan, Tane and Te Paea. Nikole is a huge part of my life and the Dojo. I can’t go past without mentioning my best friend Nelly, my four legged rockstar follows me everywhere and her bestie Whiskers.

At 9 years of age, I started my Martial Arts journey giving Judo a go for a little while. I then moved on to the Karate style of Shotokan for 7 years with a life long mentor. I transitioned over to Kyokushin Karate when I was 17 where I was taught by my Sensei who was to become a great part of my life personally. I am both blessed and grateful to my mentors for the legacy of Martial Arts education that I’m able to share with my children and our students.

I started teaching at 12 years of age, some students were more than 30 years my senior but I felt so confident teaching and I realised very early it was going to be a life long passion.

I’ve competed and won some tournaments notably in Japan where I won the 2012 All Japan Championships in Tokyo. I had two major hip surgeries late 2015 and still went on to compete in the World Full Contact Karate Championships in Shibuya, Tokyo 2016. I competed late 2021 in a internationally live broadcasted tournament in Queensland. I love to showcase and show my students what I have learnt and experienced and what determination can achieve. I encourage them always to do the same.

I would say we have a lot of fun at Karate especially the Junior Students. There’s a different type of fun for the adults. The body responds to refining technique in a focused yet relaxed state so whilst we have a lot of fun, there is also accelerated learning same time.
